The Yachter's Arms

A beer-house located in the High Street just above the railway bridge.

In the 1860s to 1870s this was known as the Brewers Arms and was leased to Steward and Patterson the Norwich brewers. Around 1880 the name was changed to The Yachters Arms and in 1894 it was transferred to Green and King of Ipswich, whose sign can be seen in the 1900 photo below.

It is likely to have closed around 1906 in the cull of licenses following the 1904 Act of Parliament.

In the 1970s No.49 High Street was incorporated and the building became The Smugglers restaurant, it has since been the town's Indian restaurant.

The list of names is mainly from census returns. They are therefore the occupants, not necessarily the licensee or owner.
